“A clean home is a reflection of a clean mind and a clear soul.” – Unknown
I love this quote! When the home is clean, life feels less overwhelming and I find I can focus, breathe, and actually enjoy the day. I wake up more motivated, and I wind down more peacefully. There’s something about a tidy space that creates room — not just physically, but mentally and spiritually, too.
But let’s be honest — keeping a clean home day in and day out is no small task. Between dishes, laundry, meals, and the constant rhythm of family life, it can feel impossible to stay ahead. That’s why today, I’m sharing a few heart-centered strategies that help me keep our home peaceful and our schedule flexible — with room for rest, connection, and worship.
💛 Why a Clear Mind Matters — and What Jesus Teaches Us
As believers, we’re called to live with minds that are sober, renewed, and focused on truth (Romans 12:2; 1 Peter 1:13). When our environment is chaotic, it’s much harder to quiet our hearts and hear from the Lord.
Jesus Himself modeled simplicity and intentionality. He often withdrew from the noise to quiet places (Luke 5:16), and He lived without excess — focused on what truly mattered: communion with His Father and compassion toward others.
Creating order in our homes is not about achieving perfection. It’s about making space to welcome peace, dwell with the Lord, and serve our families with joy. A clear space often helps cultivate a clear mind — one that is better able to pray, listen, and love.
🏡 My Story: From Clutter to Clarity
When my husband and I first got married, we moved into my 500-square-foot house. Between our clothes, wedding gifts, and hand-me-downs — plus very little counter space or storage — the home was constantly cluttered.
I would move everything from the counters to the table just to cook, and then move it all again to eat! I was overwhelmed and unsure how to manage the space I had.
The real breakthrough came when I realized I didn’t need to organize more — I needed less stuff. But not just any method worked for me. I tried all the hacks — backwards hangers, the “if you haven’t used it in a year” rule — but nothing stuck.
Until I found this simple mindset shift…
🌿 The Love, Maybe, Hate Decluttering Method
After reading Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less by Greg McKeown, I discovered a principle that changed my life:
“If it’s not a clear yes, it’s a no.”
Now I sort everything using the Love, Maybe, Hate method:
- Love: Items I use, enjoy, or find truly meaningful — these stay.
- Maybe: These are the danger zone. If I’m unsure, it’s a no. I put it in a box and if I don’t miss it within two weeks, I donate it.
- Hate: The things I keep out of guilt, fear, or habit. These are released — and I bless someone else in the process.
This approach helped me create space not just in our home, but in my mind and heart. And that made daily cleaning so much easier.
Helpful Tip: Set a specific date and time for when you’ll drop off your donation bags.
Don’t let those “goodbye piles” live in your car or closet for weeks — get them out of the house and bless someone else!
🧺 My Simple Cleaning Rhythms
With less clutter, it’s easier to care for our home without burnout. Here are the daily rhythms that help me keep our home clean, calm, and Christ-centered:
1. Morning Reset
- Make the bed
- Put away anything left out
- Wipe kitchen counters
- Start a diffuser with oils that bring peace (like lavender + citrus)
This 10-minute ritual sets the tone for the whole house.
2. Afternoon Tidy
- Quick pickup around high-traffic areas
- Involve the kids if you can
- Set a timer for 10 minutes and do what you can — the rest can wait
3. Evening Wind-Down
- Load dishes and wipe counters
- Fluff pillows, fold blankets, restore the living room
- Create a peaceful environment: soft worship music, low lights, diffuser on again
These rhythms help me end the day with peace — knowing I’ve tended to my home, heart, and family with intention.
🙌 Give Yourself Grace
Some days the laundry piles up. Some days the sink is full. Some days I forget every one of these rhythms and just survive on grace and coffee.
And that’s okay.
God is not measuring your worth by your to-do list. He is forming you in the quiet places — and often, through the quiet places. Keeping your home is holy work, because you are creating a sanctuary where faith can flourish.
🌾 Start Where You Are
If you’re longing for more peace and less mess, begin with one rhythm today. Maybe it’s your own version of a “morning reset,” or maybe it’s just decluttering one drawer.
Whatever you do, do it with grace — and do it with Him.
“Let all things be done decently and in order.” – 1 Corinthians 14:40
You’ve got this, friend.
With you in the journey,
